STONE
Stone was one of the first materials, this was used since the beginning of humanity for constructions and it has some advantages and some disadvantages. Stone is very adaptable to sculptural treatment and very durable in time. It’s found naturally and resists deformations. On the other hand, it has disadvantages such as difficult to cut, quarry and to transport because it’s very heavy, also it is expensive and it is weak in tension and unstable with loads pushing at angles. There are two kinds of stonework: first is Rubble which is the bounding of broken stones with mortar. And Ashlar Masonry which is the union of regular cut blocks of stone. Ashlar M is also the strongest stonework for monumental architecture and it does not depend on strong bonding for stability. For all those reasons, there are old stone towns like Petra and great structures like Stonehenge in England.
